Sivananda Yoga

Swami Sivananda Saraswati (1887-1963) born in Tamil Nadu, Southern India was doctor of medicine. After which he settled in the Himalayas to meditate for 7 years.

He then founded the "Divine Life Society" then later the "Sivananda Ashram".

In 1957 his disciple Swami Vishnu Devananda brought yoga to the Western World by establishing the first Headquarters of Sivananda teachings in Montreal Canada in 1961.

Sivananda started as a "live in" teacher, where students, at the age of 8, would live for 12 years in an Ashram to study Asana (physical postures), Pranayama (breath control), Dhyana (meditation, Vedanta(yoga philosophy) and Karma(selfless service), along with proper diet and moral discipline.

Now the same training is still applied to become a Sivananda teacher in South India but in less time.
