cross country mountain bike racing

10th November 2008

Well, just back from the first round of the winter series over at Thetford and boy was it an action packed day, with there being 600 riders there and 200 plus being in my race it made it very hectic.

At the start of the race I got a bad start and ended up being mid field which become a problem as from the start we hit single track and as you could imagine when you have 200 plus riders trying to go down to a single file it gets a bit manic to the point it comes to a stand still, for the leaders it was a bonus as it would give them a healthy lead.

Once through the single track and we all thinned out a bit I started to chase the riders down in front and found myself catching them and passing and kept catching the riders in front of me, then at the end of the first lap I lost my front brake completely and for me as a rider I rely on my front brake more than the rear so it then took me some time to adapt my riding style, once I got used to not having my front brake I then put my head down again and continued to chase the riders  down and surprisingly mid race I was still feeling fairly good.

Towards the end of the race I just started to feel tired but was still pushing hard when after the hard work I had done catching everyone up I punctured and put an end to my race.

Even though my race didn’t go to plan it was a very positive race after my illness, when I look back to when I was in hospital and being told I may never be able race again, it’s nice to be in the position that  I’m on my way back to form. This has been the best I have felt in the last 2 years leading up to me being ill and now things can only get better.
