Looking forward after 900 years
For around 900 years, St. Mary's has been an important part of community life within Fryerning. As St. Mary's has become entwined within village life, so the Church's role has evolved as each successive generation makes its contribution.
However, apart from proper maintenance, no major investment in the Church has occurred for approximately 140 years.
Now, our plans for a new extension will provide both a much improved vestry for the Church and an additional room offering a modern and flexible way to serve the congregation and local community.
The scheme also provides for the complete rewiring of the Church and the installation of a modern, efficient heating system.
We would like to ask for your help with these plans by pledging your support.
A new extension for a new generation
St. Mary's has recently received several generous donations and bequests. Rather than using these donations simply to maintain the Church and as a contribution towards our running costs, the Parochial Church Council (PCC) considers it appropriate to use these donations as a substantial starting point from which to fund the new extension. In this way, it can present to our new generation the opportunity to make a lasting contribution to the fabric of the Church and community.

The PCC have commissioned Carden and Godfrey, respected architects and historic building consultants, to produce the necessary plans, the result of which you see illustrated in this computer generated image. The extension is designed to give maximum flexibility of usage for both Church and Community Groups.
|
|
The extension will be self contained, and will have separate entrances either directly from outside or from within St. Mary's. This will give us the flexibility needed to make the extension easily available to other community groups in addition to parishioners.
Community Uses
The extension will be made available to the wider community for community meetings, children's parties, educational workshops and seminars.
Sunday School
We will be able to hold Sunday School on Church premises, something that is not currently possible.
Church Events
The extra space and kitchen facilities will make it possible to cater for Church events. The toilet facilities will also be welcomed by both regular churchgoers and anyone attending special events such as Christenings, weddings and funerals.
A much needed service
Having obtained planning permission from the Local Authorities, approval from English Heritage and clearance from the County Archaeological Consultants, the PCC were granted a Faculty by the Chancellor of the Diocese of Chelmsford to proceed.
Early in 2002 the residents of Fryerning were asked for their views of the project and there was a very encouraging and substantial support in favour of the project.
The PCC thus gained the confidence necessary to launch the Appeal for funds to bring the project to reality for a number of reasons.
- The success achieved in raising funds for the well received Millennium Window in the year 2000
- The positive feedback from the questionnaire
- The fact that the Church has sufficient funds available to launch the Appeal from a substantial platform
The project is estimated to cost approximately £330,000 which includes provision to update the heating system and electrical wiring in the Church which together with the cost of connection to public service represents approximately £20,000 of the total.
The Church has benefited in recent years from a number of substantial donations and bequests, some of which have been given specifically to support this project. By careful management of resources and with the support of the residents of Fryerning there is now available a sum of £100,000 to launch the Appeal. The target is therefore to raise £230,000 by public subscription. As at this date the total raised is £150,000.
